The sky was painted in hues of oranges and pinks the other night.
“You know what’s better than toys?” My son, who turns 6 soon, asked me on his way to the slider door to watch the sunset.
“What?” I say as I follow him out, watching him lick his Nerds candy popsicle.
“Living life.”
I recently had a brewing anxiety attack. I’ve enjoyed the extra time with my kids before they head back to school next week. My son said some profound words about life. I have taken these as hints.
It’s break time. I will not be posting on my Substack for the next couple of weeks.
If you’re curious, here’s all the things I have been doing and will be doing — all while not focusing on my weekly newsletter.
Take myself out on dates. I’m reading Julia Cameron’s Write for Life and she recommends going on artist dates, which are solo trips where we take ourselves out and entice our inner artist. To be a better writer, you must live life. After all, I need something to write about!
Watercolor paint. I bought this fancy travel set. My son started painting a car then decided to get back to his Legos so I continued painting over his piece. I love the collaboration and my unimpressive watercolor skills. I am doing this for fun, not to make masterpieces.
Focus on my podcast more. We recently interviewed a sex trafficking survivor and people have asked us how they can help and support. I am realizing the impact we can have with this platform. I am excited about the power of audio and how I can tell more stories with this medium.
Not be on social media. Except when I need to promo my podcast, which a bulk of our listeners interact with us.
More yoga. Mindfulness and movement, what a dream.
More walks. Without my phone. With my thoughts.
Write poetry for myself (because it will be bad). So bad. Like a pathetic angsty teenager.
Write letters to friends and pen pals. I’ve sent one to
all the way in Scotland! I just wrapped another one to Hilary Hattenbach with! I’m on a roll, people. Who else wants a handwritten letter from me? Send me a message or write in comments!Fully engage in bed rotting and feel zero guilt.
Bake sourdough bread again.
Such a fun way to show us your personality! 💙
Very excited to receive a letter from you and I think that painted palm tree is inspired. Will write you back via snail mail soon. 💌Enjoy your break!!
