I enjoyed reading your mom’s story , I can relates some of it.I did sew women’s clothes to make money on my younger age.I’m now retired and widow . I’m enjoying my grandkids and mostly my ballroom dancing.
Hi Auntie!! That is so nice to hear you relate to a lot of it. You're right, so many similarities! Mom is obsessed with ballroom dancing and I think she thinks it's too much but who cares, she only has to care for herself! Dance all you want!
When my mom called me and told me she has purple hair I was like W. T. F.
It was followed by her hysterically laughing and then my imagination grew more wild! When I finally saw it in person, I thought it looked pretty cool :)
Aww. Love this post and your mom. She's the coolest and a woman after my own heart. I love that she ballroom dances several times a week. That's a sure-fire way to stay fit and joyful. My mom and her husband did ballroom dancing for years as well and competitions. She too was very strict and into health food. Like you, I desperately wanted sugar cereal. I'd go to my friends' houses and gorge on junk food. But I know she was doing what was best for us. Mother/daughter relationships are complex and I'm so glad I'm finally at an age where I can truly appreciate my mom and all the sacrifices she made for me. In my younger years, we'd butt heads a lot. Your post gave me all the feels and I love that you took the time to tell your mom how much you appreciate all she did. I need to do the same. Thanks for the inspiration! ❤️
I thought of you when I wrote this and I thought, I bet Hilary would enjoy my mom! Yes, I LOVED going to my friend's houses and ate all the foods I wasn't allowed at home. Everyone loved me coming over because I ate whatever was served to me because it was new to me! I'm so glad my post made you think of your mom, that was my hope in general for anyone who reads it.
Beautiful tribute to your Mom and in many ways- all Moms!! Made me think of mine. Funny that my Mom says the same exact sentence - -I don’t want anyone to tell me what to do’, when we ask her why she didn’t couple up again after her divorce. My Mom is 90. She gave up a lot too. She was not able to go to college, ( only her brothers were allowed that privilege). She had 4 babies in her early 20’s, was housebound until she finally got her license by baby #4. Opposite of you’re Mom- she was home. Started working when I was 15 and retired at 73. She did have some fun trips and a good run. Old age has been less kind to her after her 80’s. Fiercely independent- she still lives alone in her own place. This is her’s and my wish for her- to be able to stay in her home. 💜🙏Thanks for opening this portal. I may need to write more on this. And yes-wow, Mercury in retrograde- I am seeing its havoc here and there!
Susan! I'm so glad you shared this thoughtful comment. I was hoping my post would allow people to think of their moms. It made me sad to think about how she couldn't go to college but watched her brothers get to go. Was it weird to see your mom start work in your teenage years? That's an interesting thought, especially because that's all I knew growing up, same with my kids seeing me, too. My mom has the same desire, to stay in her home. My sisters and I get worried about her there alone but it's where she wants to be and thrives! At home, alone, with no man telling her what to do!
So incredible for you to take the time
For this reflection and to document it and then to be brave enough to share it.
