Description:
This week’s guest holds a position in a demanding, selfless, and courageous profession where some days all she does is put out fires. This sounds a lot like being a mother, doesn’t it?!
She is a mom AND she literally fights fires for her job. Kelley Delotch is one of less than 5 percent of female career firefighters in the US. Living in California, a fire state, you can imagine Kelley’s schedule is crazy. Now, let’s imagine it with 3 kids and a husband who was also a firefighter.
Listen to her talk about the realities of the job and how she does it. Hint: she says, “attitude is everything.” Hear how she got into this field, the mental and physical stamina involved, and how she deals with the highs and lows.
We released this episode on 9/11 as we think about the firefighters and first responders who bravely chose their careers to help their communities when under fire, under attack, and simply when they needed help.

RESOURCE
Let’s bring up the next generation of female firefighters. Kelley wishes she had a program like this around when she was younger. Girls Empowerment Camp is a free 2-day camp open to teens ages 14-18. GEC introduces them to the fire service and provides campers with a realistic, hands-on overview of firefighting and exposure to all aspects of public safety career opportunities in the fire service. Additionally, the program empowers campers with life skills and professional guidance that encourages them to pursue a career in public safety.
